Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a progressive disease of the optic nerve characterized by specific loss of nerve fibers and progressive peripheral loss of eyesight. It is commonly found with increased intraocular pressure, but not always the case.

Glaucoma detection in the early stages can be detected with simple tests. At Eversee Boutique Eyecare, there are a number of screening tests performed as part of your annual comprehensive examination. Evaluation of the optic nerve for signs of glaucoma is also performed as part of your comprehensive examination. There are multiple methods for this observation and your doctor will choose the best option.

In the past, glaucoma was unable to be detected until there were physical abnormalities that could directly be observed on the optic nerve. Today, there are multiple methods available to detect glaucoma before damage and abnormalities to the nerve occurs.

There is no cure for glaucoma. The best defense against glaucoma is a well planned treatment. Treatment usually begins when eye pressure is high or when the risk factors are too great. Typical treatment includes controlling eye pressure with drug therapy, or prescription eye drops. Prescription eye drop therapy is a very effective first line treatment for glaucoma. However, a small number of patients do not respond well to drug therapy. There are alternative options such as laser or filtration procedures. These methods can be implemented, monitored and optimized at Eversee Boutique Eyecare.
